Here's my two-cents' worth: I've noticed that the characters who appear in
the video games (with the obvious exception of Knuckles) have four fingers
(not counting thumbs) on each hand, whereas the others tend to have only
three. To boot, I've noticed that on the package art for the first and
second Sonic Genesis games, Sonic's drawn with three fingers and a thumb on
each hand, whereas in Sonic 3, he apparently grew two extra fingers...
