I've always thought of the intro as something not to be taken literally,
but rather as a presentation of the show's main plot (Robotnik takes over
Mobius and wrecks the place, the freedom fighters fight back). And, of
course, the audience would probably be more used to seeing the teenage
Sonic than the 5-year-old Sonic.

Actually, according to "Blast to the Past- Part 2", Robotnik's arm was
roboticized when he fell into the roboticizer beam when the teenage Sonic
and Sally arrived to rescue Robotnik's prisoners (including their
5-year-old selfs) from the roboticizer. I don't think Tails was there.
