How to access ftpmail

ftpmail is a service users without access to regular ftp can use to
obtain files from the sonic list's ftp site.

There are two ftpmail servers. For fastest results, you should probably
use the decwrl site if you live in North or South America, or the UK site
if you live in Europe, Asia, or Australia.

The address for the decwrl site is: ftpmail_at_decwrl.dec.com
The address for the UK site is: ftpmail_at_doc.ic.ac.uk

It would be a good idea to request the help text from the server of your
choice before you try to use ftpmail to obtain files. For both servers,
send the command "help" (but without the quote marks) in the body of a
mail message to the ftpmail server.

Both servers use commands similar to regular ftp, but the commands used
by one server generally cannot be used when working with the other server.
Because most of the Sonic list subscribers live in the Americas, the
remainder of this text concerns the decwrl server only.

Here are some tips to make it easier to use the decwrl server.

1. You must always include the command "connect hff.mv.com".
2. Get a listing of files with the "dir" command.
3. Use "chdir" to change directory. You are allowed to change directory
only ONE TIME per message. If you want to get files in multiple
directories, you must send multiple mail messages. The directory
   pathlist always starts /pub/sonic.
4. It is a good idea to place a "reply" command at the top of your message.
This will help ensure your files are sent to you correctly. It's also a
good idea to use the "quit" command at the end so that the server will
   ignore your signature.
5. When retrieving binary files, don't forget to use the "binary" command!
You will probably want to use the "uuencode" command after the "binary"
command. The "uuencode" command is always used AFTER the "binary"
command! If you do not specify "uuencode", your files will be sent in
btoa format. Contact your system administrator, your BBS SysOp, or a user
group in your community if you need help with uudecoding.

Here are a few sample messages with valid commands for the decwrl server.
