I noticed the element of fear, but I never considered it as an
explanation. I simply thought of that scene as a non sequitor. That does
sound reasonable just the same. One could then expand the theory to
suggest that any shock of sufficient magnitude would cure the victim's
memory loss.

We never did see the others return to normal, but we know that they did
by the next episode. What would have brought them back to normal? We'll
never know the correct answer, but we can always speculate about what
went on between episodes.
