Actually, I've been inclined to think the opposite -- that he was either
an only child (only kat) or an orphan.  There's never been any mention
of either Chance or Jake's relatives in the series, so this is up for
debate (or the fanfic writers).

A residual thought here:  cats and kittens tend to snuggle up against
each other when they're sleeping, likely for warmth.  Can you imagine
Kats doing the same, especially during the winter?  (And yes, I know
this behavior isn't limited to felines...)

Hrm.  Seems like my mind is rambling again.  Methinks I could use a
Katnap right about now...
