Swept wings were introduced by the Germans in WW2. Again, that
wartime development thing. Swing wings were dabbled in by the
Germans (an experimental plane whose wing sweep could be changed
only on the ground), the US built an "X" plane in which the wings
could be swept in flight, and the first operational aircraft was the
F-111 in the early 60s.

The Kats probably had a similar history, with perhaps yet another
war to hasten things.
